Master thesis

on the topic „Optimization of pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment in liquid food products”

Aim of the work is to evaluate suitability of different electrode materials (other than existing steel or titanium) to minimize electrode erosion and electrolytical reactions occurring at the interfaces of the electrodes during processing of food. The first phase of the experimental work has been done and few suitable electrode materials have been tested and chosen in a long-term study. These selected materials should be further tested under different processing conditions and with different model/food matrixes (e.g. pH, electrical conductivity, viscosity etc.).

The work is part of the European research and innovation project FOX: Innovative down-scaled FOod processing in a boX (https://www.fox-foodprocessinginabox.eu/). The goal of the project is development of a mobile fruit and vegetable processing unit for mild extraction and preservation, including Pulsed Electric Fields. For potential improvement of down-scaled unit performance with respect to product quality and treatment efficiency, exploration of new electrode materials is foreseen.

We offer possibility for independent working on the project in the duration of 6 to 12 months in the area of novel food technologies in an innovative, international and exciting working environment.

Expected start is from July 2022, with certain flexibility.

Areas of responsibility
  • Literature research
  • Experimental design for model or/and real food matrices
  • Chemical analysis and interpretation of obtained results
  • Potentially predictive modelling of the electrode erosion
Your profile
  • Studies in the field of food technology/chemistry, physics, electrochemistry, chemical engineering or electrotechnics are preferred
  • Good communication skills and problem solving attitude
  • Independent, motivated and able to work in a team
  • Good computer literacy
  • Very good spoken and written English required, German skills desired

Doktorial Student (m/w/d)

to work on a project on the topic „Data Scientist / Database Manager for Interoperability Platform“

We offer the possibility of independently handling a 2-year project (with the possibility of extension) in the field of data science in an innovative and exciting environment.

Future food systems lack holistic databases and data platform allowing to interchange and operate data for the development of predictive and holistic analytical models.
Development of data plant form for the interoperation of data between different ontologies is the main task for the position within EU funded project GiantLeaps.

The details of the project will be discussed in further consultation.

Areas of responsibility
  • Identify valuable data sources and automate collection processes
  • Undertake preprocessing of structured and unstructured data
  • Analyze large amounts of information to discover trends and patterns
  • Build predictive models and machine-learning algorithms
  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets.
  • Setting up data infrastructure and develop, implement and maintain databases
  • Create visualisations of data, oorganizing, documenting and presenting results to the team
Your profile
  • Study of mathematics, computer science, data science or comparable courses
  • Strong understanding of data handling, data mining, exploration and analysis.
  • Competencies in data collection, creating data architecture and mathematical modelling
  • Structured way of thinking and well-developed coding skills (R/ Python), data management (MySQL) and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of variety of machine learning and statistical techniques and concepts using python is an asset.
  • Independent and self-motivated work style, willingness and ability to perform and work in a team
  • Good Microsoft Office skills
  • Good English written and verbal communication skills
  • A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques

17 Mär 2022 Doctoral Student (m/w/x)
to work on a project on the topic: „Life Cycle Assessment of Alternative Protein Sources“

To strengthen our team - the Food Data Group - we are looking for a

Doctoral Student (m/w/x)

to work on a project on the topic: „Life Cycle Assessment of Alternative Protein Sources“

We offer the possibility of independently handling a 2-year project (with the possibility of extension) in the field of life cycle assessment in an innovative and exciting environment.

Future food systems depend on the development of future foods based on alternative protein sources. There are some strategies that can improve the sustainability of alternative protein sources.
At the same time there is a limited information on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of alternative protein sources for the justified conclusions.

The proposed position is aimed to deal with the limitations indicated above in the scope of EU funded project GiantLeaps.

The details of the project will be discussed in further consultation.

Areas of responsibility
  • Life Cycle Assessment / Life Cycle Costing / Sustainability Assessment
  • Modelling and working with databases
  • Supporting member companies with relevant services
Your profile
  • Systems thinking (life cycle thinking)
  • Ability to carry out cost benefit analysis and similar models
  • Previous know-how with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • Experience in the fields of food, agriculture, food science and technology, and environmental engineering would be an advantage
  • Independent, committed and a team player
  • Excellent English
  • Knowledge of German is an advantage
