The legumES research project invites farmers to participate in practical field trials, actively contributing to the exploration of the environmental and economic benefits of legumes.

Legumes such as peas, beans, and clover offer significant potential for more sustainable agriculture. They reduce dependence on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, improve soil fertility, and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, they promote biodiversity and enhance the resilience of agricultural systems.

What does the legumES project offer?

  • Practical Research: Using simple monitoring methods, the ecological and economic benefits of legumes are directly studied in the fields of participating farms.
  • Financial Support: Participating farmers receive financial support and professional guidance for conducting the trials.
  • Sustainable Solutions: The results aim to make cropping systems more resilient and derive scientifically informed recommendations for policy and practice.

The project is coordinated by the James Hutton Institute and funded with 6.2 million euros from the European Commission, as well as the governments of Switzerland and the United Kingdom. An international consortium of 22 partner organizations from 12 EU countries, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom collaborates on the implementation.
