To strengthen our team in the Research Platform Biotechnology, we are looking for a

PhD candidate (m/f/d)

to start on August 1, 2020 in the research project: Consecutive fungal and bacterial bioconversion for the production of fermentates with anti Gram-negative activity.

The aim of this project is to produce high-quality fermentates with antimicrobial and anti-oxidative activity in a two-step, enzymatic-fermentative, sequential bioconversion of low-value agro-industrial by-products such as leek trimmings. You will be part of a collaborative project between the German Institute of Food Technology (DIL) and the University of Hannover.

Areas of responsibility
  • Development of methods for physical pre-treatment of agro-industrial by-products.
  • Screening of lactic acid bacteria for their ability to convert phenolic fractions of agro-industrial by-products into metabolites of higher biological value.
  • Optimization of the production of high value metabolites by lactic acid bacteria.
  • Production of prototype fermentate(s).
  • Application of the fermentate(s) in meat products.
  • Statistical analysis of the results.
  • Preparation of experimental designs and performance of experimental studies.
  • Preparation of presentations and participation in project-related meetings with industrial partners.
  • Preparation of manuscripts for publication in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Support of the daily work in our laboratories in cooperation with other colleagues and students.
Your profile
  • Knowledge of lactic acid bacterial fermentation.
  • Knowledge of the physical treatment of food.
  • Good knowledge of basic statistical concepts.
  • Ability to organise and implement work plans independently.
  • A friendly personality who can work in a team that supports equality and diversity.
