In the Research Platform Biotechnology a full-time position for a

Research Assistant Bioinformatics (f/m/d)

is to be filled as soon as possible. The DIL is building competence in the field of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and is looking for a specialist for DNA/RNA sequence-based bioinformatics in the fields of research and industrial service analytics. The applications concern the authenticity control of food, the analysis of food microbiomes and the quality control of foods or tracking of pathogens in food production. The successful candidate will have a key role in the setup and development of equipment processes and methods.

Areas of responsibility
  • Data acquisition, transformation, storage and analysis
  • Analysis and visualization of sequencing data from whole genome (re)sequencing, (meta)barcoding, meta-transcriptomics, meta-genomics, etc.
  • Processing of raw sequence data (quality control, pre-processing)
  • Read mapping against reference genomes or transcriptomes (including post-alignment processing) and de novo genome assembly
  • Setting up (meta)barcoding strategies for food authenticity control
  • Use of online bioinformatic tools and programming of own software tools
  • Collaboration in research and industrial projects
Your profile
  • Completed study in bioinformatics, biosciences or biotechnology with a focus on bioinformatics or a comparable qualification
  • Initial experience with NGS data analysis or analysis of metagenomic data
  • Good programming skills (e.g. Python, R) and statistical knowledge
  • Knowledge in the following areas is advantageous
  • - Program libraries for bioinformatics (e.g. Bioconductor)
  • - Handling with large amounts of data and databases (e.g. using SQL queries)
  • - Data aggregation, visualization and analysis
  • - Food and food-related organisms (microorganisms, plants, animals)
  • Precise and independent work, team spirit
  • German and/or English (fluent in spoken and written)

Areas of responsibility
  • Project management in the field of consumer research covering three EU projects in cooperation with other project partners (CAMELMILK – Boost the production, processing and consumption of camel milk in the Mediterranean basin, PROFUTURE – Microalgae protein ingredients for the food and feed of the future, MEATHYBRID - Substitution of animal by plant proteins in meat products)
  • Conceptualisation and implementation of further activities in the field of consumer research, together with domestic and European research associations and the food industry
  • Establishment and development of the Consumer Research / Consumer Science competence at the DIL
  • Ideally interest in obtaining a doctorate in cooperation with Dr Ulrich Enneking of the University of Göttingen / Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences.
Your profile
  • Completed studies with a focus on market and consumer research, ideally with initial experience in the field of food/food technology
  • In-depth knowledge of empirical (qualitative and quantitative) data collection and analysis
  • Interest in participating in collaborative research projects at domestic or international level
  • Ideally experience in the (academic) publication of research results
  • An independent and responsible approach to work
  • Readiness to work and travel in Europe

Areas of responsibility
  • Development and set up of the competence area ‘Innovation Hub’ at DIL for the implementation of innovation and the promotion of entrepreneurial thinking in food research
  • Establishment of the 'Innovation Hub/Boot Camp' field of competence at the German Institute of Food Technology within the framework of EIT Food
  • Conception and implementation of further EIT Food activities in the field of innovation and (lifelong) learning
Your profile
  • University degree in a relevant field (business, marketing, innovation management, etc .)
  • Fluent English, good organisational ability, ability to establish contact with different target groups (students / universities / small and large industrial companies)
  • Ideally experience in project management involving research projects at domestic and international level
  • Experience in coordination and evaluation of events
  • An independent and responsible approach to work
  • Readiness to work and travel in Europe
