In the Research Platform Biotechnology a full-time position for a

Research Assistant Bioinformatics (f/m/d)

is to be filled as soon as possible. The DIL is building competence in the field of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and is looking for a specialist for DNA/RNA sequence-based bioinformatics in the fields of research and industrial service analytics. The applications concern the authenticity control of food, the analysis of food microbiomes and the quality control of foods or tracking of pathogens in food production. The successful candidate will have a key role in the setup and development of equipment processes and methods.

Areas of responsibility
  • Data acquisition, transformation, storage and analysis
  • Analysis and visualization of sequencing data from whole genome (re)sequencing, (meta)barcoding, meta-transcriptomics, meta-genomics, etc.
  • Processing of raw sequence data (quality control, pre-processing)
  • Read mapping against reference genomes or transcriptomes (including post-alignment processing) and de novo genome assembly
  • Setting up (meta)barcoding strategies for food authenticity control
  • Use of online bioinformatic tools and programming of own software tools
  • Application of and collaboration in research and industrial projects
Your profile
  • Completed study in bioinformatics, biosciences or biotechnology with a focus on bioinformatics or a comparable qualification
  • Initial experience with NGS data analysis or analysis of metagenomic data
  • Good programming skills (e.g. Python, R) and statistical knowledge
  • Knowledge in the following areas is advantageous
  • - Program libraries for bioinformatics (e.g. Bioconductor)
  • - Handling with large amounts of data and databases (e.g. using SQL queries)
  • - Data aggregation, visualization and analysis
  • - Food and food-related organisms (microorganisms, plants, animals)
  • Precise and independent work, team spirit
  • German and/or English (fluent in spoken and written)

In the shortest possible notice, interested in working in area of Life Cycle Assessment on topic: "LCA comparative study of FOX mobile juice production system and standard industrial juice production system".

 

This Master (Bachelor) thesis/internship will concentrate on one of the tasks of European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program named: Innovative down-scaled FOod processing in a boX (FOX) (Öffnet externen Link in neuem Fensterhttps://www.fox-foodprocessinginabox.eu/). The aim of this project is development of mobile and modular processing units with innovative small-scaled mild preservation technologies for use in regional food systems, as a basis for innovative SME-led business models.

Aim of master thesis/internship will be evaluation of environmental impact (LCA) of two different apple juice production systems, one based on FOX approach and of the other one considered standard larger-scale industrial system.

Areas of responsibility
  • Literature research
  • Collection of data relevant for LCA for mentioned topic
  • LCA analysis and interpretation of results
Your profile
  • Studies in the field of food technology or related to topic
  • Prior experience in LCA analysis not necessary, but is an advantage
  • Good communication skills, teamwork and motivation to work on this topic
  • Good computer literacy
  • Good spoken and written English skills required
